Complete Guide to Rock Climbing (Practical Handbook)
Published in Paperback by Lorenz Books (October, 2001)
Average review score:

A great guide for all levels of climbersI've only been climbing for a month, and this book has taught me so much. It has great color pictures that make it very easy to understand all the climbing jargon that I was quickly confused by at the gym. This book covers what equipment you'll need for different types of climbing, clothing, saftey precautions, indoor, outdoor, bouldering, locations for good climbing, and lots more. There isn't a better book on the market for climbers.

The Concise Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians
Published in Hardcover by Schirmer Books (December, 1900)
Average review score:

The Concise Baker'sFor those of us who can't afford the complete Baker'sBiographical Dictionary of Musicians, the Concise version is still agreat buy We have owned the 8th ed. for some years and use it very frequently. This dictionary has good clear information on not just the well known composers and performers, but many minor composers and performers as well. Like the complete ed., this dictionary includes jazz musicians. One of the best features of this book is that it not only has the biographical article, but has the composer's works divided up into the various types of composition, such as piano music, giving both titles and dates of compositon. A great reference tool, particularly for anyone wanting to find more pieces by a favorite composer, or a date for a piece already known. .

Continuum: The First Songbook of Sweet Honey in the Rock
Published in Paperback by Contemporary A Cappella Publishing (24 March, 2000)
Average review score:

Continuum Continues Sweet Honey's TraditionContinuum receives high marks for the quality content. It contains 4 songs from each of Sweet Honey in the Rocks five most prolific songwriters. Many of the songs are favorites of mine, and it includes chants, freedom songs, and songs of worship from several of their albums. The book is written in a friendly, easy to use style. I could get together with several of my friends, or a whole choir, and have all the information I would need to perform their music. It also includes information about Sweet Honey's members, which helped me better understand where their music comes from. This book would be extremely helpful as a resource for anyone who works or dabbles in music and wants to promote Sweet Honey's message of love and justice.

Conversations with the Dead: The Grateful Dead Interview Book
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (16 April, 2002)
Average review score:

Another Must-Have for DeadheadsThis is probably the single best book I've ever read about the Dead. It's so much more immediate and satisfying to hear how things went down from the Dead themselves than from a faceless biographer. David Gans asks the questions *I* would have asked Jerry & Bob & Phil & Mickey & Billy. You'll feel like you're there hanging out in their living room with them. A wonderful insight into what made that magical machine run for over 30 years...

Conversing with Cage
Published in Paperback by Routledge (October, 2002)
Average review score:

excellent book for those wanting to know about Cage's ideasThis book is a collection of interviews with John Cage, the late avant garde composer who was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. The interviews span nearly a half century and give a cogent idea of Cage's thought on music, art, education, politics, and social revision.
If you are curious about why a composer would write music that is "silent", why he would use chance, nonintention, and denounce music as communication, this is a good book to begin an overview of Cage's philosophy of art.
It also shows that Cage's musical thought was not monolithic, but changed several times in the course of his life, as did his music.

Crossroads: The Experience Music Project Collection
Published in Hardcover by Experience Music Project (15 August, 2000)
Average review score:

From Sock Hop to Hip HopThis book is a very well crafted historical review of popular music frequently referred to as Rock and Roll. From its early roots to its latest manifestations, this book covers the gamut. As such it is a companion piece to the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle, and if you can't get to Seattle, this book would at least give you a flavor of what awaits you there. Well written, with beautiful art and photos from electric music roots in 1935 through today. It succeeds in connecting the lineage in words and pictures. Highly recommended.
